Ann Böttcher

For Art of Memory, Ann Böttcher (b. 1973, Bruzaholm, Sweden) exhibits six intensively detailed drawings of trees at The Observatory Museum. Each of the works originates from a differing source. One of them is taken from the 19th-century painter Caspar David Friedrich; another depicts a tree from the Taurus Mountains in Turkey. At The Observatory Museum, the sense of sight is essential, as is the careful recreation of what has been seen. From this point, one observes the sky and stars and then represents them in as detailed a manner as possible, all in the name of science. Technology has evolved – today one photographs the sky rather than drawing it. Yet Ann Böttcher’s work still reminds us that our knowledge of the world has always relied on observation and reproduction.
